Cloudy day. Overcast skies. Family. Children. Photo shoot… What to do? | New Jersey
While most people love sunny days and bright skies on the photo session, some photographers prefer cloudy or overcast days.
Outdoor photography normally depends on the weather conditions. A bright sun is hard to work with and can overpower any portraits or family pictures. But, the best light doesn’t necessarily mean the brightest.
Let’s see why cloudy days provide plenty opportunities to take great family photos or children portraits, etc.
#1. A Big Soft box: cloudy sky can be seen as a giant soft box. Nice diffused and soft light will help to avoid harsh shadows on the faces, bodies, etc.
#2. Clouds create gradual transitions between highlights and shadows. Therefore, the photo will not have sharp transitions between light and dark areas (for example, between grass in the sun and in the shade)
#3. With soft light, you can easily achieve even skin tones in portraits.
#4. Bright colors become especially noticeable against the background of boring, dull shades. This is the perfect time to use color as a key element in photography. Due to the uniform illumination from the overcast sky, the brightness of the clothes colors becomes especially noticeable. Reds and yellows stand out especially. Wearing bright colors for overcast photo shoots is advised, since they can create a good mood and bright photographs.
#5. On a cloudy day, you can get excellent back-lighting. Soft, diffused light behind you will create a fabulous atmosphere in the photo.
#6. Cloudy skies may look more interesting on the photo, instead of the blue sky – really, it’s just a blue sky.
But if you prefer sunny days, just reschedule, especially if you have the flexibility. I always offer a free reschedule if this is the reason, don’t worry.
