Winter family photo session. What to wear? | New Jersey

Winter can be the most beautiful time of the year. And the most magical winter weather is a snow of course. Snowy trees and frosty rivers make a wonderful background for your winter family photo shoot.

Regardless of the presence of snow outdoor winter photo sessions can be really cold. And you will want to be sure your family comfortable and warm while posing for pictures.

Here are some tips, which help you dress properly and get great family pictures and maintain a good mood through to whole photo session.

Winter family photo session. Outdoor photo shoot. Outfits

Interesting visible Layers

Family photo sessions can take a long time to complete, so you need to be sure you’re prepared for different changes in weather. The best way to do this is layer dressing.

It can help keep you warm and usually it will add a good contrast to the photos:

 • Put on collared shirt underneath a sweater

 • Choose a nice sweatshirt or sweater with jacket

 • Add a blanket or scarf to your sweater dress

You can switch your layers on your choice: add/discard clothing if the weather will change to warm/cold, use different combinations of layers on different photographs, etc.

Hidden layers for warmth

Hidden layers are just as important as visible ones, because they will keep you warm:

 • Avoid itchy wool sweaters.

 • Extra socks help your feet to be warm.

 • Don’t use bulky hidden layers which may stick out from under clothing.

 • For winter coats it is better use belts or wearing tapered coats.

 • Use a thin warm thermal wear, which would not impact your appearance on camera.

 • Hand warmers can help you keep warm.

 • Your thermal wear needs to be comfortable.

Accessories

You can bring winter accessories to the family photo shoot. They add elements of fun and help you to stay more comfortable during the photo session. You can use: hats, gloves or mittens, scarves, boots, etc.

Change your clothes

I suggest you bring a change of clothes, especially for your kids. Often children running, they can fall down and we will see a dirt or stains on the clothes. If it’s snow outside, children can be cold or wet, and you may to switch their clothes or add some layers to warm them.

Finally, if you have a change of clothes, there is nothing to ruin your photos and your mood.

Matching outfits

You can choose to have precisely matching outfits, but sometimes it can be boring and will not add variety and contrast to the pictures. Instead, you can choose a color theme that everyone wears. For example, mom may wear light blue top, dad wears light blue pants (jeans) and children use these colors in an accessories like hat or scarf.
It will keep your photos more interesting and add to them, by maintaining contrast.
